Trauma Release Exercises

The human body possesses an organic ability to heal.

Trauma Release Exercises (TRE) is a powerful, body-based method that can help you release the deep-seated tension and stress that often accompanies trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and panic attacks. I know that starting any kind of trauma therapy can feel daunting, especially if you’re already feeling overwhelmed by your experiences. That’s why I want to share with you how TRE works and why it might be a gentle yet effective way for you to start your healing journey. TRE is designed to tap into your body’s natural ability to heal itself, without requiring you to revisit painful memories or engage in intense emotional processing. It’s a process that many have found to be both empowering and profoundly healing.

TRE was developed by Dr. David Berceli, a trauma expert who worked in some of the most conflict-ridden areas of the world. Through his work, Dr. Berceli noticed that people often respond to traumatic events with an instinctive shaking or trembling. Rather than seeing this as a sign of weakness, he recognized it as the body’s natural way of releasing stress and restoring balance. Based on this insight, Dr. Berceli created a series of exercises that safely activate this shaking mechanism, allowing the body to release the physical tension associated with trauma. These exercises are simple and can be adapted to your comfort level, making TRE a safe and accessible option for many people.

When it comes to treating PTSD, anxiety, and panic attacks, TRE works by helping to release the tension and trauma stored in your muscles and tissues. Often, trauma is not just held in the mind but also in the body, leading to chronic tension, pain, and a sense of being on edge. TRE allows your body to shake off this tension, much like animals do in the wild after they’ve faced a threat. This process can bring about a deep sense of relaxation and calm, helping to reduce the intensity of symptoms associated with PTSD and anxiety. Research has shown that TRE can lead to significant reductions in stress and anxiety, with one study published in The Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies highlighting its effectiveness in reducing PTSD symptoms (Berceli & Napoli, 2007).

Trauma Release Exercises have been used to help individuals recover from a variety of traumas, including natural disasters, combat trauma, and childhood abuse.

The practice has gained popularity in recent years and is now used by therapists, social workers, and other healing professionals in over 70 Countries.

Trauma release exercises are an extremely gentle method.

As the process uses a series of simple exercises to invoke tremors that are then able to be self-regulated; it does not require talking about or recalling past events and does not require the ongoing assistance of a therapist for the vast majority of people; meaning the process can be used on your own on an ongoing basis to support and enhance other approaches.

Benefits of TRE® Include:

  • Relief of ongoing stress or tension
  • Pain relief
  • Release of emotional or physical trauma
  • Promotes overall sense of calm and relaxation
  • Reduction of anxiety and depersonalization in the body
  • Cessation of Panic attacks

We have seen firsthand how TRE can help people who are struggling with the aftermath of trauma. Clients often describe feeling lighter, more relaxed, and less burdened by their symptoms after just a few sessions. It’s a method that respects your body’s natural healing processes, allowing you to release what you no longer need to carry, without having to relive the trauma itself. A study in "Traumatology" found that participants who practiced TRE reported significant improvements in their overall mental health, including reduced anxiety and fewer panic attacks (Levine & Berceli, 2015). If you’re feeling hesitant about starting trauma therapy, TRE might be the gentle, effective approach you’ve been looking for. It offers a way to begin healing at a pace that feels right for you, using your body’s innate wisdom to guide the process.
